Hammock camping is an amazing way to explore and adventure with extreme freedom, so it’s easy to see why it’s becoming increasingly popular! If you’re new to the hammock camping scene then there’s a few factors you might want to think about before committing to purchasing a certain product, at the end of the day you want what’s best for you. The right camping hammock could make or break your camping experience … so make sure you get something that’s going to work for you. There are some key factors you need to take into account. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of things to consider when buying a new camping hammock.
Single or Double Hammock
While you’ll obviously need a double hammock if you’re planning on sharing it with someone else, even solo campers often prefer to opt for a double for the extra space and security.
Of course, you’ll need to decide whether the extra packed size and weight is worth it. If you want to travel ultra-light, then a single hammock makes most sense.
If there are two of you, you’ll definitely want a double hammock (or two separate single ones).
Choosing the Length of Your Hammock
A good rule of thumb for camping hammocks is that they should beat least 2 feet longer than your height. So, if you’re 6ft 2, you’ll want a camping hammock that’s at least 8ft 2 long – and ideally a bit more.
If you’re shorter, you can get away with a smaller hammock – though you may still prefer a longer and roomier hammock.
Protection Against the Elements
If you’re going to be camping somewhere cold, or during a chilly or wet time of year, then you’ll want a camping hammock that offers suitable protection. Some hammocks come with insulated padding, for instance, and others have a rainfly (tarp) or attached cover to keep you dry.
Keep in mind that the more you add to your hammock, the more weight and bulk you’re going to be carrying. You’ll want to plan things like your route and what else you pack accordingly.
Firstly, it’s important to remember that just because a hammock tent can sustain more weight doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s made from a sturdier material. However, a hammock’s weight load is an obvious factor to consider depending on if you are thinking of adventuring with someone or flying solo.
With some camping hammocks, the variables that determine how much weight it can support are the straps and carabiners. Normally these can be swapped at a later date for a stronger version if you ever change your mind and want to fit an extra person into the hammock.
Many of the items listed in this article have different designs so it can be tricky to decide which style is best for you. A lot of camping hammocks on the market only come with a mosquito net which isn’t going to help you if the weather takes a turn for the worst! So, if you’re looking to get some serious use out of your camping hammock then you are definitely going to need to buy a rain fly (tarp).
There are generally 2 types of rain fly, attached or floating. Attached tarps are much more practical because they usually don’t require any additional setting up. On the other hand, a floating rain fly can provide a much more comfortable camping experience as it helps improve ventilation and space.
In addition to the type of tarp, it's important to consider the hammock’s insulation properties and your desired requirements. If you’re looking to camp during the colder months then it would be beneficial to invest in a double-layered hammock so that you can tuck in a sleeping pad. If not then a foam pad can provide some extra insulation to a single-layered camping hammock combined with a good quality “cold weather” sleeping bag.
A lot of modern-day camping hammocks come with additional storage slots and features to suit the explorer’s needs! Make sure to explore if the hammock has any side pockets, waterproof wallets for your valuables or even space to put your backpack.
Fastenings and Security
All of the products listed come with polyester tree straps which tend to be the most common and easy to use on the market. Other suspension systems include a whoopie sling, but unless the hammock states so it will probably come with standard straps. Aluminium carabiners tend to be the industry standard for camping hammocks as they provide a durable and reliable fastening for your hammock.
The kind of places you are looking to explore and camp really do determine what style of camping hammock you might need! Are you going to be camping in the forest? Beach? Rugged terrain or flat? Or perhaps a bit of everything? Consider all these variables before committing to a new hammock tent.
Deciding What Extras to Buy
Some hammocks are just a hammock: others come with extras, such as a built-in mosquito net, which is definitely going to make your life more pleasant if you’re camping in an area that’s known for its mosquitos.
You may also want to carry extras with you like spare straps for your hammock, just in case of problems. You can buy hammock tree straps without a hammock, usually for around $10 - $15 for two straps.
If you’ll be camping somewhere cold, you’ll likely want a sleeping pad orunderquilt to help keep your hammock cosy and snug. You’ll normally need to purchase this separately from the hammock itself.
This video has some great tips on what gear you’ll need:
Deciding How Lightweight Your Hammock Needs to Be
Some camping hammocks pack down incredibly small (around the size of a grapefruit) and you’ll barely notice the weight. Others are a bit heftier – especially if they’re designed for 2 people, and come with a tarp, stakes for the tarp, plus a mosquito net.
If you’re going to be hiking a long way, you may want to keep the weight and bulk of your gear as low as possible. If you won’t be doing much walking, you may be perfectly happy with a larger hammock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are camping hammocks safe?
A. Yes, camping hammocks are safe – so long as you fix them securely. Most camping hammocks need fastening to two sturdy trees, though you may also be able to fasten your hammock to a pole or even a wall. Make sure you don’t exceed the maximum user weight for the hammock, either.
Q. Is a hammock better than a tent?
A. A hammock is a great alternative to a tent for many campers. It’s much smaller and more portable (some camping hammocks are just the size of a grapefruit once packed up). Plus, many people find that a hammock is much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground in a tent.
Q. Do you need a sleeping pad for hammock camping?
A. If you’re going to be camping at a cold time of year, you’ll definitely want a sleeping pad or quilt to keep you warm. Otherwise, you’ll find the bottom of your hammock gets cold at night.
Q. What do I need for hammock camping?
A. At an absolute minimum, you’re only going to need your hammock and a suspension system. However, there are a few additional things that might be necessary depending on the environment and climate. If you’re camping in a place with a lot of bugs and mosquitos you’re going to need an insect net. It’s advisable to always have a rain tarp at the ready in case there’s a chance of rainfall. Finally, most hammock campers will use an underquilt to provide some extra insulation for any unexpected cold nights!
Q. What’s the best distance between 2 trees?
A. There is no set rule to this because it depends on how long your hammock is and the length of your tree straps. In general, a distance of around 9-14 feet will give your hammock a good hang and the majority of tree straps will accommodate this distance comfortably. Once you get used to hammock camping you will know your equipment and be able to know from simply looking at 2 trees.
